Sint-Joriskerk

A household name in Amersfoort and surroundings. Three organs can be viewed during a visit in the medieval church building.

The church has a rich history. The lower part of the tower (ca. 1200) is a remnant of the hall church of the Lords of Amersfoort. After Amersfoort received city rights in 1259, the construction of a cross basilica began. Various extensions led to the three-aisled hall church, which was completed around 1534. A showpiece is the late Gothic doxal made of natural stone. The Naber organ is also impressive. The interior was once colourful, but after the Reform in the 16th century, the vault paintings disappeared under whitewash. Partly these have been recovered during restorations. From May to October, viewing is possible from Tuesday to Saturday.
